Hello fashion sewers and welcome to our Fashion Sewing Blog.

In today’s post, I want to briefly touch upon the topic of fashion sewing threads and hopefully share with you some useful information that may make your sewing projects a little easier and successful.

This post is by no means designed to be the ‘definitive‘ guide to threads.

Instead, I’ve filmed a video tutorial that is designed as an introductory guide to those fashion sewers who may want to learn more about fashion sewing threads, or for the beginner, just beginning out on their fashion sewing journey.

Walk into any fabric or fashion sewing store today, and you’ll be surprised at just how many threads you can purchase.

I’m not surprised at why we, as fashion sewers, get confused at what to buy, when faced with rack upon rack of multi coloured fashion sewing threads.

Is it any wonder that many of us continue to buy the wrong threads for our sewing projects.

Honest answer – NO!

So let us take things back to basics.

Fashion Sewing Threads – Handy Hint Number 1.

Although there are a vast array of threads to purchase, generally, there are four types of thread we use in fashion sewing. They are -

1 – Polyester thread
2 – Cotton thread
3 – Cotton wrapped polyester thread
4 – Silk thread

Fashion Sewing Threads – Handy Hint Number 2.

Try to make sure, when you purchase a thread for your sewing project, that the thread is virtually the same colour as your fashion fabric.

If you can’t quite find that match, buy a thread that is a slightly darker shade than your fashion fabric rather than lighter.

Any lighter and it becomes visible.

Fashion Sewing Threads – Handy Hint Number 3.

Quality counts! If possible, stay away from cheaper, fuzzy threads as they tend to break easily. This is because of the short staple fibres that make up the thread itself.

Using a better quality thread will give immediate visible improvements.

Fashion Sewing Threads – Handy Hint Number 4.

Ask! Rather than be bamboozled about the vast array of choices, simply ask a member of staff in store.

Don’t make rash choices, or worse, waste money buying completely the wrong thread. The staff should have sufficient experience to be able to guide you further.
