Sewing a Self-Bound Seam

Sewing Self-Bound SeamsHello fashion sewers and welcome to our Fashion Sewing Blog.

In today’s FREE article, guide and online fashion sewing video tutorial, I’d like to demonstrate for you the technique of sewing a self-bound seam.

A self-bound seam is sewn on the inside of a garment and invisible to the eye from the outside.

Created from a plain seam, the self-bound seam (as the name suggests), is folded onto itself and is either machine, or hand sewn.

There are many variations of seams and the one you choose to use, will depend on either garment type or fabric. The self-bound seam is ideal for use with lighter weight fashion fabrics.

Seams are integral to fashion sewing (after all, they allow one piece of fabric to be attached to another), so I’d certainly recommend you learn as many variations as possible.

1 - With the right sides of your fashion fabric together, sew together to create a plain seam.

2 – Trim one side of the seam allowance approximately 0.5cm’s – 1/4 inch.

3 – Turn under the edge of the other seam allowance and press.

4 – Turn and press again, only this time, bring the folded edge to the seam line.

5 – Enclosing the trimmed edge under the folded section, either machine sew or hand stitch.
