Hello fashion sewers and welcome to another free online fashion sewing video tutorial post.
In today’s article and demonstration (requested by a viewer of my FashionSewingBlogTV channel), we shall look at the sewing, and insertion of raglan sleeves into a sewing project.
Before we make a start, I just want to say a big thank you to everybody who takes the time to leave wonderful comments or requests a specific fashion sewing technique.
Fashion Sewing Blog is YOUR forum and I’ll always do my very best to answer every comment and fit in as many fashion sewing video requests as I can. Thank you!
What Is A Raglan Sleeve?
sewing
A raglan sleeve forms part of the garment that is being made!
Other sleeve types are ‘set in‘, i.e. the garment is constructed and the sleeve attached later.
A raglan sleeve however is sewn into the armhole and body of a garment during the construction process!
Why Do I Need To Learn How To Sew Raglan Sleeves?
sewing
The raglan sleeve is an easy shaped sleeve to insert into the armhole of a garment.
The sleeve itself is easy to construct and can add a decorative effect to your fashion sewing projects.
Raglan sleeves can regularly be found in sportswear garments, jackets, coats as well as dresses and tops.
The advantage of a raglan sleeve compared to others, is, due to its makeup, less restricting in its movement.
‘If you’re serious about becoming a better fashion sewer, then you DO need to learn this key fashion sewing technique’!
NB – Please note! Raglan sleeves can be cut in either one or two pieces. In this fashion sewing tutorial, I’ll be using the ‘two piece‘ raglan sleeve.

Sewing Raglan Sleeves – Instruction And Guide
sewing
1 – With right sides of fabric together, match up sewing pattern markings on the raglan sleeve, pin / baste and sew the overarm seam. Press open, (use a tailor’s ham because of the curvature of the seam).
2 – Sew the underarm seam of the raglan sleeve and press. Turn the sleeve to the right side, ready to be inserted into the armhole / body of the garment.
3 – Put the raglan sleeve to one side, and sew an ease stitch within the armhole seam line on the front and back section of the garment itself, between the sewing pattern markings.
4 – Sew the side seams of the garment together and press open.
5 – Place the right side of the sleeve to right side of garment. Ease the armhole to the sleeve, making any necessary adjustments to obtain evenness throughout the seam. Pin into place.
6 – Sew the inside of the raglan sleeve, starting from the neck point (the back), around the seam, finishing at the neck point (front). Press the seams open.
7 – Hand sew a catch stitch at the point in the garment where all seams are joined together, to help keep the seam open and flat.
‘Your raglan sleeve is now complete’.

Regarding pattern 6094. Completely lost with the neckline. Is there a tutorial on this portion?
Thanks, Wonderful site. I wish if found it before I started the dress
Hi Pat,
Could you tell me the exact problem you’re having with the neckline? I should be able to help and be a little more specific.
Thanks
