The Butterick B5602 Lined Dress Sew-Along!
As I write this post and look out of the studio window, the sky is blue and the sun is trying to break through the little cloud that slowly floats by.
Perfect timing I think for us to make a beautiful lined dress, ideal for those outdoor occasions this spring.
Fashion Sewing Blog readers have voted and our dress of choice, the Butterick B5602 lined dress will now be made up in this easy to follow tutorial sew-along.
It’s time to look and feel amazing!
Before we go any further, do check that you have everything you need to complete this sewing project. I’ve compiled a quick checklist.
Do have a look, it won’t take long! Click – Sewing Project – A Checklist For The Butterick B5602 Lined Dress.
Good to go!

A Little More Instruction
sewing
1 – Darts. There are 12 darts in total for this dress (including darts in the lining). See how to sew darts by clicking here!
2 – Neck band. Sew all pieces of the neck band (6 in total) to the dress (3) and the interfaced bands (3) to the lining. Trim, clip and press the curved seam.
3 – Centre Back Seam. Sew the seam, ready for the zip / zipper insertion. See how to insert a lapped zipper by clicking here!
4 – Side Seams. Sew and press the side seams open, (including the lining). Put the lining to one side until needed.
5 – Dress and lining at this stage of construction.
6 – Hem Band. Sew and press open the seams of the band. Pin onto the hemline of the dress, matching up side seams and machine sew. Trim and press the seam towards the band.
7 – Hem Band. Turn in a 1cm / 3/8inch seam allowance of the un-notched edge of the hem band and press. Turn up the band to cover the raw edge of the hemline. Pin, baste and slipstitch into place. See how to slipstitch by clicking here!
8 – The Bow. I would advise you follow the sewing pattern instruction sheet to complete the bow, but at the time of writing, I’m more confused than ever.
NB – The dress lining. I will be completing a tutorial video on this stage which will be available at FashionSewingBlogTV from Friday. My preference is to make up the lining as I make up the dress. It can be done this way or left until the end.
At this stage, the lining of the dress needs to be sewn onto the dress, prior to slipstitching the zip / zipper.
9 – Zip / Zipper. Slipstitch the lining to the zipper tape.
And You’re Done!
Do take your time and if you have any questions (or want to show me how to complete that bow) then please feel free to do so.
I’ll be posting photo’s of the finished dress in a day or so. Do look out for them on my blog and Sewingista Gallery.
I hope to see photo’s of your finished lined dress there soon!
Happy fashion sewing

I’m a bit confused about the neckband. After they are sewn to the dress and lining, at what point do you sew the 2 neckbands together?
Hi Genny
The neckband is sewn together at the shoulder as part of the shoulder seam.
Hope that helps.
Regards
Colleen
Thank you for filming a video tutorial on how to attach a lining piece! Looking forward to it on friday!
Hi Joyce
No problem. Thanks for leaving a comment.
I wasn’t sure if anyone was using tailor’s tacks anymore~ that’s good to see. I teach my students this method for it’s efficiency.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Alethia
I’m a great exponent of the tailor tack. It’s how I was taught and it stuck with me.
Thanks for the comment.
