So what is a patch pocket and why do we need to learn how to create and sew them?
Patch pockets are used, not only for there particular functionality, but also to add a great looking, decorative element to a garment.
Patch pockets are versatile. They can include specific detail such as gathers and pleats, thus adding that unique brand to a sewing project.
Patch pockets, unlike other pocket types, are created by making the pocket up and then adding it directly to an area of a garment, where it is then stitched into place.
Just take a look into your wardrobe, and I guarantee you’ll see many forms of patch pocket. They can have rounded corners, be of angular design and feature buttons and zippers.
So I hope you agree that learning how to create and sew patch pockets is a more than worthwhile pursuit.
Let’s see how it’s done!

As you can see from my fashion sewing demonstration, there are two distinctive parts to sewing patch pockets.
The first, creating the patch pocket itself, and the second, attaching and sewing it to your garment.
Let’s look at these two elements in a little more detail.
How to Prepare a Patch Pocket

1 – Using a steam iron, press the raw edge of the top of the pocket, around 6mm on the wrong side. Fold the pocket facing to the fold line and press.
2 – Press all three edges of the patch pocket, about 1cm – 1/4 seam allowance.
3 – Mitre the corners with just the tip of the iron.
4 – Turn the patch pocket to the right side and after pinning into place, machine sew.
How to Sew a Patch Pocket

1 - Place the pocket into position on the garment and pin into place.
2 – When machine stitching, dependant on the kind of stitching you desire, start at the top part of the pocket with the opening facing you.
3 – Start sewing 6mm away from the edge, sewing the top of the pocket first, down and along the side and bottom edge. Continue sewing up the other side. The pocket is now sewn.
