Hello fashion sewers and welcome to Fashion Sewing Blog.
Today, I’d like to talk about, and demonstrate for you, (by means of a FREE fashion sewing tutorial video), the technique of sewing French seams onto a sewing project.
But why should we, as fashion sewers, need to learn this specific technique?
The answer is a simple one really.
As fashion sewers, we like to work with as many fashion fabrics as we can.
We crave to create wonderful looking, professional pieces of clothing each and every time we pick up our needle and thread.
So when the time arrives to tackle that rather expensive and very delicate piece of fabric, to create something very special, we are going to need to know exactly how to sew it properly.
Sewing a French Seam
sewing
The French Seam is the preferred seam for use on sheer and delicate fabrics.
It is most associated with items of clothing such as lingerie.
The French Seam itself is self-enclosed, being stitched twice in total. The first row of stitching is sewn to the right side of the fashion fabric whilst the second, is sewn to the wrong side.
If you get this technique just right, it produces a beautifully narrow and strong seam.
However, getting the French seam ‘just right‘ can be a little tricky, especially when stitching the ‘second‘ seam.
Let’s have a look at the tutorial video and I’ll try to explain further!

Sewing the French Seam – A Little More Instruction
sewing
1 – Working on the right side of the fashion fabric, sew 0.5cm – 1/4inch from the raw edge.
2 – Trim the seam allowance close to the stitching line and press the seam to one side.
3 – Fold the seam so that the right sides of the fashion fabric are now facing.
4 – Press again, ensuring that the stitched line is directly on the edge of the fold.
5 – Sew a second seam, 0.5cm – 1/4inch from the fold, enclosing the raw edge and first stitch line. Press to one side.
You’re done!
Do practise these techniques and before long you’ll soon find them almost second nature.
