One key area to successful fashion sewing, and successful fashion sewing projects, is to practise and perfect the basics.
The more you repeat and refine these principles, the better fashion sewer you become.
Now I’ve always promoted the learning of hand sewing, as without it, you limit both your own skill set and the projects you can complete. Hand sewing gives you a professional and tailored edge!
[toggle title=”What about your sewing machine?“]
Are there ways in which we can practise our sewing machine technique and develop better skills?
The simple answer is yes!
Getting better control of your sewing machine, the needle, the presser foot as well as stitching, all go a long way to helping you become a more competent fashion sewer.
And one such way to develop this control and focus – the sewing of circles!
Now some of you may be thinking this is a pointless task. All I ask is that you read on, watch the video tutorial and then make up your own mind.
Think about it!
Fashion sewers generally sew in straight lines. Occasionally, we sew curves. If you practise sewing full circles, getting your eye in, then straight and curved lines ‘should‘ become a little easier to complete.[/toggle]
Trust me. I’ll show you exactly what I mean.
How to Sew Circles
Use a zipper foot for this technique. This will enable you see the drawn circle shape and get that stitching right on target.
1 Draw a circle on a scrap piece of fabric.
2 Divide the circle into quarters (optional).
3 Machine stitch around the drawn circle. Focus on your stitching and how you manoeuvre the fabric.
4 Keep practising until you can sew perfect circles.
Simple AND highly effective!
Why not suggest a fashion sewing technique to me. You never know, you may just see it here at Fashion Sewing Blog.
Happy fashion sewing.
