Hello fashion sewers and welcome to our Fashion Sewing Blog.
In today’s article, guide and FREE online fashion sewing video tutorial, I’d like to demonstrate for you the technique of creating button loops.
We have previously looked at, and completed the process of creating buttonholes here at Fashion Sewing Blog, so I want us now, to expand upon our learning and to look at creating an alternative fastening for our buttons.
What are Button Loops?
Button loops (as I hope you can see from the articles featured image), are simply a fastening for buttons and are easily recognisable.
They usually extend beyond a garments finished edge.
I think most of us (of a certain age), can probably relate best to button loops as those found in our childhood on big, thick and warm winter coats.
These days however, the button loop has become something of a fashion accessory and statement. In fact, these loop fastenings are very popular on bridal wear in particular.
Button loops can vary in thickness and size dependent on the type of garment you may be making along with the style of button to be used.
Button loops can either be created out of fabric tubing (like spaghetti straps) or can be created from cord or braid.
Making Button Loops – What You’re Going to Need

So what do you think?
As I think I’ve mentioned in the video tutorial, there are other ways of making button loops but I have found, that by using this method prior to sewing, that it allows the fashion sewer to get a great result without any awkwardness.
Furthermore, this method of creating button loops assures that you get correctly spaced, equal size button loops as you can see them on the paper in front of you before even one stitch is sewn.
Easy!
