Sew-Along Structure And Sewing Guide!
sewing
As always, below, and during any of my Fashion Sewing Blog sew-alongs, you’ll find a slideshow and written instruction to assist you in the making up of this dress.
For all of those fashion sewing beginners among us, this dress is a great little number with design variations. It will also develop your skills as the dress requires lining and the insertion of boning to help give support and shape.
I have chosen to sew and create design A during our sew-along. You can still follow along if you choose to create design B
In part one of our sew-along, we will be sewing the bodice (upper section) of the dress.

1 – Neck Straps – Sew the straps, length ways, ensuring one end is left open as indicated by the dot. Turn to the right side and press.
2 – Pleats – Sew the pleats to the shoulder area then press them away from the centre.
3 – Strap Position – Position the straps of the dress and then sew them into place.
4 – Sew Lining – Place the right side of the lining onto the right side of the bodice front. Match up all sewing pattern markings then pin, baste and machine sew. Trim and grade then turn the lining to the inside of the dress and press.
5 – Neckline – When sewing the ‘V‘ of the neckline, make sure that the seams on the lining and fabric are open. Cut away any bulk and press.
6 – Understitch Lining – To keep the lining in place, understitch.
7 – Gathers – Baste the lining and the fabric raw edges together and gather them between the notches.
8 – Midriff Section – Pin the right sides of the lower section of the bodice front to the upper section of the midriff.
9 – Boning – Prepare and insert the boning into the seam of the lining.
10 – Back Section – Open out the back lining and place the side seam of the front, matching up markings, sandwiching it between the lining and the fashion fabric. Sew.

I do hope that the thought of sewing with a media such as boning doesn’t put you off from taking part in this sew-along.
To assist you, I have recently written a full article on sewing with boning entitled – How To Insert Boning Into A Seam.
Contained within the article is a free ‘how to‘ video tutorial. For your convenience, I’ve attached it to this sew-along post to help you complete the Simplicity 2884 dress.
