A Little More Sew-Along Help

sewing
1Centre Seams – Place right sides together and sew the centre seams of the front and the back. Once sewn, press.

2Pleats – Ensure the pleats are lying towards the centre seam then baste into position. To see how to sew quick and easy pleats click ‘Sewing Pleats‘.

3Skirt Lining – Sew the darts and the side seams, ensuring that the left seam is open as indicated by the sewing pattern marking for insertion of the zipper later. Clip into the seam, stitch at the notch and press open.

4Lining (Hemline) – Machine sew a narrow hemline to the skirt lining.

5Skirt (Hemline) – Remove any fullness from the hemline and then hand sew the hemline using a slip stitch or hemming stitch.

6Skirt and Lining – Place the lining into the skirt, wrong sides together. Match up the seams and then pin along the waistline, ensuring the area for the zip / zipper is clipped and even.

7Bodice – Place the bodice of the dress into the skirt, right sides together. Pin the bodice to the skirt, matching up the seams and then press the seam toward the skirt.

8Boning – When sewing the seam of the boned area, make sure you do not sew over the boning.

9Zip / Zipper – Insert the lapped zipper.

10Tape – The top of the zip / zipper tape must be folded.

So how are you doing, any problems?

Do take your time and keep referring back to your sewing pattern guide sheet. If that doesn’t help, then please feel free to contact me and I, and the fashion sewing community will be more than happy to offer advice.

Happy fashion sewing
