Hello fashion sewers and welcome to our Fashion Sewing Blog.
In today’s article, and FREE online fashion sewing video tutorial, which came about as a request from a reader, I’d like to demonstrate the technique of inserting a set-in gathered sleeve.
Now I know for some of you (me included some years back), the thought of inserting set-in gathered sleeves will leave you in a cold sweat.
But!
Fear not – Let me show you how to do it with my handy video tutorial, and with a little practise, you’ll be gathering everything in sight.
As with most things fashion sewing, do remember that this is not an exact science, and I do encourage you to experiment with all of the techniques I demonstrate to find and develop your own unique creative flair.
So where do we start?
Gathering the Sleeve Head
Before we insert out gathered sleeve into the bodice section of our sewing project, we must first add the gathers to the sleeve head.
Rather than bore you rigid with more of my ramblings, I have previously wrote about, and demonstrated in a fashion sewing video tutorial, the technique of sewing gathers.
If you’re unsure or a little hesitant about adding and sewing gathers, please do check out the following -

Once you have completed adding the gathers to the sleeve head, the next stage will be inserting the sleeve into our sewing project, thus creating a set-in gathered sleeve.

You’ll now find my fashion sewing video tutorial demonstrating the next stage in the process.

I hope my video demonstrated that adding set-in gathered sleeves is not as difficult as one might expect.
Let’s look at the process a little closer.
How to Insert a Gathered Sleeve
1 – Gather the head of the sleeve. Ensure you secure the gathers.
2 – Sew the sleeve seam and press. Turn the sleeve to the right side.
3 – The garment and armhole should now be on the wrong side.
4 – Insert the sleeve with the right sides facing (right side of garment to right side of sleeve). Match up all of the markings of the sleeves to the markings of the armhole.
5 – Pin the sleeve securely into place and baste stitch if you need to.
How to Sew the Gathered Sleeve
1 – Work on the inside of the armhole, which will be the wrong side of the sleeve. You can tell as you can clearly see the gathers.
2 – Start sewing from the underarm seam, along the seam line and upon reaching the gathered area, ensure you stitch just to the inside of the first stitch line. Use your fingers to control the gathers as you sew.
3 - Sew all around, ending where you started.
4 – Sew another line of stitching at the underarm to reinforce the seam.
I do hope you found this fashion sewing tutorial useful.
If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch and I’ll see you next time.
Happy fashion sewing
