Making Bias Tape

Making Bias TapeHello fashion sewers and welcome to our Fashion Sewing Blog.

In today’s article, guide and FREE fashion sewing video tutorial, I’d like to demonstrate for you a very easy way in which you can create your own bias tape / bias binding.

What’s more, you won’t need any special equipment!

In fact, it’s safe to say, that with just a little investment in time, you can create roll after roll of bias tape / bias binding using just a simple strip of card.

Yes, you heard right – card!

Making Bias Tape – Preparation

sewing
To make bias tape / bias binding, we are first going to need bias strips.

Bias strips are made out of fashion fabric and are designed and used to allow the fashion sewer to create bias tape / binding, sew trims as well as sew with piping and more besides.

I have previously wrote an article and filmed a fashion sewing video tutorial on the process of cutting and making bias strips. If you want to see how it’s done, simply click -

Making Bias Tape – Tools

sewing
You can buy machines and gadgets that create bias tape / bias binding for you.

However, I’m going to show you a quick way to create the tape / binding without the use of such machines, using only the following -

1 – A hot steam iron
2 – A length of card about 30cm’s – 12inch’s in length (length may vary dependent on sewing project).
3 – Small amount of double sided sticky tape (optional).

The technique for making bias tape / bias binding by hand can be explained as follows -

1 – Cut a straight length of thick card (measurements will vary dependant on sewing project).

2 – On both ends of the card, place double sided sticky tape to help hold in position on the bias strip.

3 – Turn up one side of the bias strip, covering just under half the width of card. Press and repeat this process on the other side.

4 – Remove the card and re-position further along the bias strip. Repeat point 3.

5 – Your bias strip is now bias tape / bias binding.

If you do have any questions relating to this, or any other fashion sewing related matter, then please do get in touch.

It’s always a great pleasure to hear from the fashion sewing community.
