Hello fashion sewers and welcome to our Fashion Sewing Blog.
In today’s article and FREE fashion sewing video tutorial, I’d like to demonstrate for you, the techniques of cutting, and then sewing a square neckline.
I do hope you find the following demonstration of some use, and I hope it will further your fashion sewing skill set.
Cutting Square Necklines
sewing
There will be times, dependant on your specific sewing project, that you will need to learn how to cut out a square neckline.
This can differ somewhat, from cutting out other such necklines and there are two specific techniques to learn.
It is important to try to learn and perfect these, as we are aiming to achieve nice straight edges to our square neckline and accuracy is key.
In my fashion sewing tutorial video below, as featured on my FashionSewingBlogTV, I’ll show you both techniques, but first, let me explain how to achieve that ‘perfectly cut square neckline‘ each and every time.
How to Cut a Square Neckline on the Fold
In this particular method, we are placing our sewing pattern piece onto the fold of our fashion fabric.
Ensure, prior to cutting out, that the sewing pattern piece is secured onto your fashion fabric using pins.
1 – Cut from the fold, inwards towards the sewing pattern neckline.
2 – Upon reaching the sewing pattern, remove the scissors and begin a second cut, higher up, adjacent almost to the top of the shoulder.
3 – Fold back the shoulder area, allowing for the scissors to cut down, meeting the very first cut, thus completing the cutting motion and producing a neat, straight edge.
How to Cut Out a Full Square Neckline Pattern Piece
Again, before cutting out your sewing pattern, ensure it is firmly pinned into place.
1 – Cut around the armhole and shoulder seams.
2 – Fold back the shoulder section. This allows for a straight line to be cut along the base of the neckline section.
3 – Cut from the middle of this second cut, up and diagonal towards the top of the sewing pattern neckline.
4 – You should now be able to place the scissors so a cut can be made along the other side of the neckline, thus completing an accurate and straight cut.
Now I know all of that sounds a little complicated.
Honestly – it isn’t.
It’s just complicated to explain in words. In reality, and practically speaking, these are two techniques are easy to achieve and produce nice straight and accurate results.

Sewing Square Necklines

1 – When sewing a square neckline, reinforce each corner (front and back) with short stitches.
2 – Repeat the same for the facing, reinforcing each corner.
3 – Sew the shoulders of the garment and facing, pressing the seams open.
4 – Working on the right side of the garment, place the right side of the facing into position, matching up all notches and seams. Pin into place.
5 – Stitch together and clip into the corners.
6 – Trim and grade the seam allowance and then press.
7 – To stop the facing from moving, understitch and press again.
Please do remember that if you’re a little unsure about techniques such as trimming and grading, understitching etc, then you can find these, and many more FREE tutorial video’s at FashionSewingBlogTV.
