How to Sew an Easy Jacket with Sleeves

Snug and Stylish this Winter!

As with previous posts, my aim is to continue to demonstrate more key techniques in fashion sewing, to allow YOU to create wonderful and inspired clothing.

I would like to introduce you to an easy sewing pattern, (ideal for the beginner fashion sewer) and look to make a warm, winter jacket (with sleeves) sewing project.

The sewing pattern is a See and Sew Easy Jacket pattern, reference B5067.  To take a closer look, click – See and Sew Jacket Pattern.

This particular sewing project continues on from my last two posts where the making of a winter capelet was demonstrated.  Don’t worry if you missed those posts, simply click the links below and take a look -

How to Sew an Easy Capelet – Part 1 AND How to Sew an Easy Capelet – part 2

I would describe this particular sewing pattern as an unlined double breasted jacket with raglan sleeves, which is an easier sleeve to sew and ideal for beginners.  This jacket involves hand sewing at the jacket hemline and the sleeves.

The slideshow looks at the techniques I used to make this particular jacket.

1 - Tools – Fabric scissors, tape measure, pins, needles, threads, interfacing, thimble, buttons.

2The Raglan Sleeve - They are in two parts.  Sew them together and hem the bottom of the sleeve by hand, using a catch stitch in order to complete them.

3 - Open / Plain Seam – The raw edges are overlocked/serged.  You can use a zigzag stitch (on a sewing machine) to neaten up the seams.

4Hand Sewing – Use a catch stitch around the hemline and the sleeves as this is an unlined jacket.

5The Collar – The upper and under collar has been sewn and turned out.  The front edge to the sniped area has been stay stitched (the red line), and will be sewn along the neck line of the jacket.  The upper collar will be hand sewn later.

6The Collar Shaped -  It will take this shape when the jacket is completed.

7The Jacket Shape – Both side seams sewn and completed sleeves attached.

Pattern Rating 6/10 - good shapes to the bodice – sits well but the sleeves let it down badly.  Good positioning of the raglan style front and back.

I have always recommended to my students the virtues of using (and owning) a mannequin to sew great and professional fitting clothes.  If you don’t have access to one,
