‘Britney Spears gets sewing lesson in Sweden!‘
Well, that’s what they want us to believe. Being an inquesitive type, I read the article.

So What Did You Think?
Now I’ve nothing against Miss Spears but it was the comment she later tweeted -
“Sewing lesson in Sweden from the wardrobe team! Sweetest ladies”
And that therein is where my problem lies.
For years, dressmaking (modern day fashion sewing) was the preserve of the ‘older‘ lady and seen by the young as both an unfashionable past time, usually performed by their grandparents, and pretty much dull and boring.
Today, fashion sewing is on the incline, and although more and more of us are spending our precious time behind a sewing machine, the young (for the most part, not all) see us as ‘Sweet Ladies‘.

If we are to pass this valuable craft through generations, then surely it is our duty to move with growing trends and not be afraid to innovate, change and adapt. The youth are fashion sewings future.
We Are Not Sweet Ladies – We Are Sewingista’s!
In my a previous post, ‘There’s No Sex In Sewing‘ I examined if there was a need for fashion sewing to use sex to promote and advertise its virtues to a wider audience.
Now I’m asking if we can grasp the youths attention and attract them to this wonderous art and encourage and develop long lost skills. I say we can. Fashion sewing IS sexy! Here’s three reasons why!

Who else, apart from a fashion designer knows how to make their own clothes?
We have a knowledge, ability and skill to sew and create clothes that show off our best assets.
We know body shape, we know size, and we know how to dress appropriately for a perfect fit each and every time.
Fashion sewers posess a rarely seen confidence, brought about from making, then ultimately wearing a piece of clothing that was made to measure.

We (the fashion sewers) are all part of an exclusive club.
We are trend setters, able to brand ourselves without falling foul of the dreaded high streets – cheap disposable fashion lines.
We maintain a large network of support and advice and encourage our Sewingista to continue and thrive in this wonderful art form.

Fashion sewers posess a rare talent!
We have developed a skill set that most onlookers envy.
Onlookers, friends or family are amazed at the beautiful piece of clothing that YOU, yourself have created.
SIY (Sew It Yourself) gives you the talent to be in full control of your creative destiny.
You have the talent, the style and grace to change your appearance by simply sitting behind a sewing machine.
With the right sewing pattern and right fabric choice, you can look like a million dollars.
We are creative doers, have a voice that matters and Sew It Yourself is a credible force to be reckoned with!
So let us influence our younger generation and involve and emerse them into our world. More and more skills are being lost to the ravages of time in this self indulgent world. Don’t let fashion sewing be one of them!
